MoveToListen takes a lighthearted, yet focused and attentive approach to movement. Fitness here is holistic and informed. It is an art as well as a science. We work to build and maintain a solid foundation of body awareness and functional movement by discussing mechanics and technique. We interweave mindfulness in order to move in a way that is ruled by our own individual selves- body, mind and spirit. We embrace the idea that the relationship with our bodies is ongoing and sometimes “it’s complicated”. As with most long-term relationships, it will have its peaks and valleys and though goals aren’t necessarily a bad thing, HOW we get there is crucial to longevity and success. Being receptive to the needs communicated to us by our bodies can help support us in a single moment and for a lifetime. MTL strives to take the same conscious approach to the spaces and community we help to create online and beyond. In listening, we hear: holistically, the need for adjustments in most aspects of the fitness industry and movement community are loud. MTL feels it is imperative to work against the dysfunctional norms that work against us collectively. Below are three pillars of practice which help guide MoveToListen towards progress:
Accessibility– Providing educated, certified, and experienced instruction, our Virtual Weekly Group classes provide a serene scene and interaction at a sliding scale . Private Session costs are on a sliding hourly rate- instructor gets paid the same regardless of attendance. This means, one could book an hour and participate alone or with a buddy/ies. Packages and Packets are also offered to minimize cost. NO membership contracts or sneaky charges. We encourage people to change it up with their movement practice! Of course, regulars are loved and it’s appreciated when people return but we are only one part of a sea of knowledge and expertise. Life is fluid. What may serve you now, may change in the future. As MTL grows, we will continue to search for more avenues of accessibility within our communities. In the interim, keep an eye open for streaming options!
Acceptance and Autonomy – We accept EVERY body. Starting with our own. This is a space for us to acknowledge where our bodies are in the moment and to exercise them in regard, respect and with minimal bias. MTL strives to hold body neutral and gender neutral spaces. All ages and abilities are welcome. Physical agency is encouraged as we make movement choices. As a facilitator, MTL is a guide, not a dictator. You should feel safe, and connected to your own agency.
Advancement– Each season, MoveToListen is donating 10% of its Weekly Virtual Group earnings to a chosen organization, collective or group working AGAINST racism, gender-bias, ableism , et al. LISTEN is a page focused on equity within the movement/fitness world. Here is where each cause will be displayed, as well as other highlights focused on uplifting BIPOC instructors, facilitators, movers and shakers.
MoveToListen is about moving through the world receptively. Whether information is coming to you internally, or from the environment around you; awareness of the information is crucial to developing a healthier, stronger, connected and potent mover- holistically.
